Courtyard By Marriott

Grand Rapids, MI

Presented by: Central States Region of the Alliance for Community Media

Hosted by: Grand Rapids Community Media Center

Powerful media tools; trained technicians; educators and administrators; modern distribution platforms…these are all key elements of successful community based media endeavors. But media that really strengthens communities takes more than pushing buttons. It takes creative thinking, strong collaboration, a commitment to service, and robust curiosity.

This is the Art of Community Media!

The backdrop for this gathering is ArtPrize, a radical and massive “popular vote” art contest that, for the 2nd year, will literally take over the streets, bridges and buildings of Grand Rapids’ downtown. We will gather in this inspiring setting, to celebrate community media, share innovative ideas, and learn to become more effective, valuable and creative stewards of the voices in our communities.

Courtyard By Marriott Downtown: Special hotel rate is $104 per night for single/double. Must book by Sept. 10th for rate. Reference Alliance for Community Media-Central States.

Thursday Opening Plenary: “The Age of User Generated Content”

How have trends and developments in social media and user generated content affected the work, operations and perceived relevancy of both traditional and community media? Hear from three perspectives: traditional media, new media and PEG. what is working? What is not? What are we learning? Speakers: Darin Estep, grand Rapids Press; Tom Bishop, Media Bridges; Kolene Allen, Grand Rapids Public Library

Friday Keynote Luncheon: “The Art of Collaboration” When communities come together, great things can happen. What does it mean to really collaborate? Well-respected change leader and Community Foundation president, Diana Sieger will help you think about all the pieces that make successful collaborations and ultimately impactful programs.

Friday Trade Show: Check out an exciting array of Community Media support services and equipment at the conference trade show, thanks to our vendor friends and business supporters!

Module “A” Sessions “The Landscape”

Trend Spotting: What’s hot and what’s on the horizon in user centered media & the role of communications technology in daily life? Understanding social media and other digital developments can help us better plan for, and continue to evolve meaningful services for our communities.

The U-Verse Experience: First-hand experiences of launching PEG on AT&T systems. Was it complicated? What did it cost? What was the level of assistance and support from AT&T? Three different centers and three different experiences will be profiled.

Fight Club: Learn techniques for organizing and taking action to protect community voices. Seasoned PEG veterans will join the ACM’s new Executive Director, Sylvia Strobel to lead this empowering session.

PEG in the Courts: What’s the latest in Court battles to protect PEG access in our communities? And what might it mean for the future? Get the inside scoop from those who have been on the front line.

Public Policy Working Group: In order to protect the voice it is necessary not only to be active but to be pro-active.  In this session we will collectively discuss the landscapes we face, the changes we want to promote and devise a plan for advocacy on a local, regional and even national level.

Module “B” Sessions “The Practitioners”

Access in a Box: Is not instant, and it definitely requires some elbow grease, but it’s still possible to cook up a community media center in these times.  A recipe for a lean, mean, on very little green, access to media machine!

Sustainability thru Diversification: Many struggling centers are looking at “Fee for Service” and fundraising to help stabilize their organizations. Panelists will discuss their approaches, successes and challenges related to fundraising, income generation and new project/service development.

PEG and the Web: The Issues and the Approach

Who’s streaming? Who’s archiving? How’s that going? What are concerns or problems? What are best practices? This will be a facilitated group discussion and group think about these emerging issues.

The Next Generation: Youth Media Learn what tactics and structures PEG organizations are using to successfully attract, motivate and retain youth / young adult program participants.  Be ready to share your best practices, too.

Collaboration Showcase: A sampler of program and service collaborations involving Community Media Centers. How did they happen? Who funded them? What were the objectives? What did they learn? Sure to be a session packed with take-home ideas.

Module “C” Sessions “The Collectors”

The Power of “Story”: Be inspired by the transformative nature of stories, and revitalize your passion for storytelling as the core of community media. Session presenters are specialists, not in media, but in “storytelling and story collecting”.

PEG and Citizen Generated News: Expansion or Diversion? Learn how some CMC’s are creating and launching new frameworks to empower citizen reporters. How is it being structured? What lessons are being learned? How is it being paid for? Is it strengthening or diluting community media?

The Flip Side! (aka: 60 second stories) – an all day, hands-on session

Spend the day with your colleagues, using Flip Cameras and simple software to capture, post and upload compelling small stories from in and around ArtPrize. Get to know these easily available tools and become skilled at using them to help share stories of your communities.

Evening Events

ThursdayEnjoy the excitement and wonder of ArtPrize, right outside the conference hotel, then join with friends and colleagues after to toast the evening. Self-guided ArtPrize tour maps will be provided.
